It HURTS!!! Should I do it?

This is a question we hear every day in the clinic. It is human nature to avoid things that hurt but sometimes the avoidance of a movement or activity can exacerbate the problem. The rule of thumb we use is this: If it hurts when you do it but is NO WORSE after you are done, it is probably okay (even beneficial) to continue the activity. If the pain lasts (more than 30 min) and is WORSE post – activity such that you have difficulty sleeping or need medication, then it is not advisable to continue that activity or movement. Complete rest for soft tissue injuries is only recommended for a maximum of 48 hours post trauma and then gentle activity should be resumed. Physiotherapists are experts in assessing and improving movement and function while relieving pain and optimizing healing. We can get you back to your activity safely while avoiding re-injury. If you’re still not sure…..come in and get some advice from our “movement experts”!!
