What causes Vertigo and Dizziness

There are many many causes of vertigo and dizziness. Our vestibular system is part of our sensory system and is responsible for providing information to the brain about our spatial orientation, head position, and our body movements. It allows us to stay balanced, stabilize our head and keep our sense of equilibrium. The main components of our vestibular system are the inner ear, the eyes, and the brain.

Vestibular issues can result from any number of problems, including inner ear issues and infections, head trauma, concussion, whiplash, TMJ issues, brain-related issues, systemic diseases, medication and more. Problems or injuries to any of these components can cause us to feel dizzy, spinning, off balance, light headed or nauseous. One of the most common reasons for dizziness and balance problems is a malfunction of the structures in the inner ear. This results in Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV).

Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT)

What can a Physiotherapist do for Vertigo?

Infographic of the Benefits of Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy

Physiotherapists as primary care practitioners are highly trained to assess whether your symptoms are coming from the inner ear and therefore likely to respond to rehab or whether your problem is more serious.

Vestibular rehabilitation is a proven and highly effective treatment for dizziness and balance problems no matter your age or duration of the problem. BPPV is one of the most common and easily treated forms of vertigo. With appropriate treatment, usually only 1-3 physiotherapy sessions are needed.

Sometimes vertigo is associated with whiplash, neck or head trauma, TMJ issues, or even combined with poor overall ability to balance. Our therapists assess all body systems to optimize healing and function. We design an individualized treatment program that will include maneuvers to correct vertigo through hands on treatments, home exercises, advice and education about properly managing your condition and possible lifestyle changes to reduce reoccurrence.
