What is Arthritis?

Osteoarthritis is the most common chronic joint disease that effects quality of life and daily function. It is caused by the inflammation, breakdown and eventual loss of cartilage in the joints. It can happen in any joint, but the most common forms are osteoarthritis in the knee and hips. The disease can worsen over time and joint pain can progressively get worse, but treatment can help reduce symptoms.

Arthritis Treatment

Exercise therapy has been shown to produce the best pain and functional outcomes for osteoarthritis

A chart describing the effectiveness of certain types of treatment (e.g., education, weight loss, exercise therapy, paracetamol, NSAIDs) along the dimensions of pain reduction and gain in function. Exercise therapy showing the greatest effectiveness in both dimensions.

Research shows that movement & exercise is more effective at managing the pain of arthritis than medications & rest. At Bonavista Physical Therapy, we develop individualized programs focused on helping our patients get moving and empowering them to exercise safely. If we see clients early enough, we can even treat them for the stiffness that is present before bony changes start to occur and prolong the life of the joint.
