Did you know low back pain (LBP) affects nearly 80% of adults at some time in their lives? And 60-75% of patients that have back pain once will experience recurring problems. The majority of back pain is mechanical. This means that there is a problem with the moving parts of the spine. The tissues affected can include discs, ligaments, muscles, nerves, or cartilage. Physiotherapy will help you learn the cause of your LBP, relieve pain and get you safely back to your activities. Don’t wait! The earlier you seek help, the quicker your recovery and typically fewer treatments are required.
First, your physiotherapist (PT) will take a very detailed history regarding the onset, duration, irritability, intensity, location, aggravating and easing factors of your symptoms. They will also complete a physical assessment of your movement and limitations. Once the PT has determined that you have mechanical pain of musculoskeletal origin, we will explain the anatomy and cause of the pain and begin treatment aimed at helping you manage and prevent future episodes. From there, the PT will give you some simple movements or postures that will help reduce the mechanical strain on your tissues and promote healing. Most patients start noticing decreased pain and increased range of motion on the first visit.
