Shoulder Impingement, hip bursitis, knee osteoarthritis, golfer’s elbow, tennis elbow patients needed

Bonavista Physical Therapy in Calgary is hosting a continuing education course for physiotherapists on June 23rd and 24th 2012. This course is a McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Treatment (MDT) course for advanced practitioners of this method. An essential feature of this educational program is the demonstration of assessment and treatment principles on symptomatic patients. For this course, we are looking for patients with shoulder impingement, hip bursitis, osteoarthritis of the knee, golfer’s elbow or tennis elbow. Examination and treatment is conducted by the course instructor (Richard Rosedale – an expert from Ontario) who is certified by the McKenzie Institute International. An examination and one treatment, if appropriate is provided free of charge. MDT treatment emphasizes education and active patient involvement in the management of their treatment to decrease pain quickly, restore function and independence, minimizing the number of visits to the clinic. If you would be interested in participating, please contact the clinic where Kari Lambden, Gord Routledge or Audrey Long will conduct a phone interview/triage and then schedule you as a patient on the course. Please call us at (403) 278-0705.

Waiting for an MRI or to see a Specialist in Calgary, Alberta?

Just because you are waiting for tests does not mean you can’t be treated for your pain or lack of function. Physiotherapists are trained to make a FUNCTIONAL diagnosis, we don’t rely solely on these tests in order to treat our patients. For example, it has been well documented that patients with ADVANCED degeneration in their spine can (and often are) painfree and fully functional. Alternatively, an MRI or X-Ray can show very little and yet the patient is in severe pain. Remember that MRI, X-Ray and other tests are a static picture. The picture doesn’t always predict the function. MRI and X-Ray are usually done with the patient laying down – when their pain is not present!. A specialized physiotherapy assessment (MDTor McKenzie done here at Bonavista Physio in Calgary) has been shown in the research to reduce the need for MRI and surgery by 50%. The research was done on patients with full leg sciatica. For simple back or buttock pain, the results would be much higher. The great thing about MDT assessment and treatment is that we know within 3 Visits if it is going to work! While you are waiting for your MRI/specialist appointment, why don’t you try 3 visits with one of our McKenzie trained physiotherapists.
